Where is Zastava HQ?
Zastava's headquarters and factory are located in Kragujevac, Serbia, 130 kilometers southeast of Belgrade. Our address is Zastava Automobili, Trg Topolivca 2-4, 34000 Kragujevac, Serbia.
Zastava Specijalni Automobili (Zastava Special Vehicles) produces pickup trucks in Sombor.
Zastava currently has the capacity to make 60,000 automobiles per year, par with Italy's Carrozzeria Bertone of Turin. It uses about 20% of this capacity at time of writing.
Zastava Automobili directly employs about 5,000 people. An estimated 100,000 livelihoods across Serbia are believed to be connected, directly and indirectly, to Zastava.
From its price tag to its affordable running costs, the Zastava is designed to present an unbeatable value. Zastava Automobili builds the second; fourth; eighth, and fifteenth most-affordable new cars in the world.
We offer unburstable mechanicals and true simplicity, from the fully-independent suspensions of our
Skala 55 and
Koral In (the most affordable cars in the world to offer independent rear suspensions), to the electric-assist power steering of the new
Zastava 10.
The Zastava is refreshingly easy to maintain. In Serbia, an extensive dealer and servicing network - by far the largest in the country - ensures that our customers are never far from assistance, when necessary.
Zastava is the best-selling brand in Serbia, due to low cost of buying and owning its cars, and to those cars' simplicity and ease of repair. Long-term, while a strong dinar is expected to reduce the price of imported vehicles, the real lending rate is expected to rise, raising the real cost of borrowing as money tightening aims to reduce inflation. The affordability of the Zastava automobile will remain a strong selling point. The Serbian vehicle market is predicted to account for more than 80,000 units by 2010, a rise of almost 50% over 2005 figures.
The future of Zastava is assured through Serbia's customs-free agreements with southeast Europe and Russia, a region of more than 300 million.
Foreign interest in the impending privatization of Zastava is visible in the company's recent agreements with Fiat and General Motors. Through the end of 2007, more than 9,000 Zastava 10s will have found homes. Exports have begun. As of June 2007, the new Zastava 10, which complies with
Euro 4 emissions standards, is emerging from Kragujevac, on the same lines that Britain's Autocar magazine praised as the most modern in the region, noting that the quality of the Zastava 10 is better than that of Fiat's original, thanks to new equipment
('Why Zastava's revival is no joke,' Autocar, October 31st, 2007). Autocar also noted that Zastava had invested considerably in the robotized line used to produce the Zastava 10, thus finding itself on a technical level above that of Renault's Romanian Dacia arm. The magazine recalled that Opel's people had been pleasantly surprised with what they saw upon their visit to Kragujevac in the Summer of 2007.
Indeed, GM's engineers, visiting Kragujevac on a trip organized by Opel's Wolfgang Friedrich, concluded that Zastava possessed the technical standards necessary to assemble Opel cars. In July 2007, Zastava signed a deal with Opel that will in 2008 make Kragujevac the 81st place in the world where General Motors vehicles are produced. The contract allows for 30,000 Opels to be assembled through 2012.
Zastava and Opel teams began collaborating in June 2007, and have been meeting every month since.
In March 2008, Zastava will release Europe's most affordable diesel: the
Florida In TDC, priced at under 8,500 euros. Power steering and air-conditioning will be standard equipment. The average fuel consumption of Zastava's newest automobile will figure at under 5 liters per 100 kilometers. Independent testing by Serbia's
SAT Plus magazine has found highway fuel consumption of just 3.5 l/100 km at a steady 90 km/h.
Zastava Automobili currently has three key foreign partners: Fiat; General Motors, and PSA/ Peugeot-Citroen.
Zastava has been tied to Fiat since 1953. In 2005, the two companies signed a deal by which Zastava would assemble - and, eventually, produce - the Fiat Punto II.5 as the Zastava 10.
In July 2007, Zastava and General Motors signed a deal to first import, then assemble, the Opel Astra Classic II. Imports began in the Summer of 2007, with assembly slated to start in 2008.
Zastava uses Euro 3 PSA/ Peugeot-Citroen 1.1-liter and 1.6-liter engines in its Koral In L and Florida In L models. 2008 will see this deal extended to include the French company's 1.4-liter HDI unit, making the new Florida TDC Zastava's first ever production diesel automobile.
Per Ivan Kekić, director of GM for Serbia, "our agreement with Zastava has surpassed all our expectations.
"Two months after signing the agreement, Opel became the best-selling import brand in Serbia.
"In the first three months, 1,092 Astra Classic II models were sold, which works out at an average of 360 cars per month. That figure is climbing steadily." (Auto Start, December 2007)
We also produce trucks and pickup trucks.
Zastava Automobili and Zastava Auto are part of the Zastava Group, which also incorporates
Zastava Kamioni (Zastava Trucks) and
Zastava Specijalni Automobili (Zastava Special Vehicles). The past fifteen years have been exceedingly difficult for Zastava. Had we not continued producing cars, there would have been no factory with which Fiat could strike a deal in 2005; no opportunity for General Motors in 2007.
The new
Zastava 10 is evidence that we are investing in new technology. Our 15 million euro line was praised by no less than Britain's
Autocar magazine as being more advanced than that which produces the Dacia Logan in Romania
(Autocar, October 31st, 2007). The division responsible for building it, Zastava Auto, is profitable. It will soon begin assembling the Opel Astra Classic II.
As exports of our Zastava 10 commence, we want to continue to provide our home market with affordable new automobiles. Not only are Zastavas considerably cheaper than imported cars, but Serbia's foreign trade deficit reached 5.36 billion euros in 2006, an 11% increase versus 2005. The country's deficit has never been below $2 billion. Over the past fifteen years, much of Serbia's deficit has been spent on consumer goods rather than invested in equipment and new businesses. As Serbia's oldest manufacturing firm, we believe Zastava has had, and will continue to have, an important role in redressing the balance.
Zastava's most affordable car is the
Skala 55, also the second most-affordable automobile in the world today.
Indeed, the 5-door
Zastava Skala 55 is derived from Fiat's 4-door 128, Europe's 1970
Car of the Year. We've made changes over the years, both mechanical and to the interior, including improved seats and dashboard.
Each month, the Skala 55 occupies the second or third spot on Serbia's best-seller list. We've made more than a million, and we'll continue building so long as our customers are buying.
Zastava produces the Yugo in modified form as the
Koral In and Koral In L, launched in 2002. The Koral In is the world's fourth most-affordable car.
